It was free choice month for Another Year of Schnibbles.
At first, I found that exciting - there are so many wonderful Schnibbles patterns I've not yet tried and I've the charm pack stash. However, I was in the midst of my queen size Schnibble of the Lincoln pattern. There was no way I was going to finish that in July so that wouldn't quality. As the month went by and I hadn't made my choice, I decided to make a mini Schnibble using one of my favorite blocks so far.
I call this mini Popsicle. It is the card trick block from Schnibbles Doc and using charms from My Sister & Me.
I am looking forward to the parade and glad our AYOS hosts Sinta and Sherri make the choice for August. (smile)

Block two of the Tetris Quilt-a-long from Happy Quilting. Here is my block 2 - my daughter (13 7/8 years old) said I left too much white space in block one and stepped up to the challenge this week. Turned out, it was tougher than she thought!

Been a long week and I am looking forward to an hour or so of quilting tonight.
First up, 18 more stars for my queen size quilt. Once done, that gives me 39 of the 41 that I need. Have no idea why I didn't piece 2 more in my chain piecing frenzy!
Then, week 2 in the Tetris quilt a long. My daughter solved for this one - all laid out and ready to sew.

SewCalGal's FMQ challenge for July was brought to us by Angela Waters. The idea was to frame a portion of the fabric, FMQ inside and then repeat.
I decided to try some of the previous months lessons and practiced my feather and my leaves in two of the boxes. I was pleased with the regular length of my stitches. The curls - upper left - gave me a lot of problems.
Thanks again to Darlene for inviting these FMQ experts each month. I continue to learn and enjoy. Off to practice some more.

Ever find yourself grinning from ear to ear while you are quilting?
I bought this batik strip pack probably two years ago. I loved the colors but could never quite figure out what to do with them.
Happy Quilting is doing a Tetris quilt-a-long. I decided to do mine with 2 1/2 squares instead of charms and got excited when I realized that I actually had the perfect use for my strip pack. You 'play' the game on paper using the blocks she posts each Tuesday. (My daughter says I'm a bad Tetris player with my white space.)
I was all smiles playing with color. All sewn together!
And a pile of goodness ready for the next block!

I've been making steady progress on my shawl. (Link to blog post with information on pattern.)
There are essentially two more rows to do. Each of the fans section is done as a unit and you need to pick up 50 stitches to start a new one. I've become a pro at picking up stitches. One thing I really like is when you make a mistake, sometimes it is easier to just rip out the fan and start again. (Don't ask me how I know this.)

When I was in Seattle, in addition to the couple of quilt stores, I found a yarn store called Churchmouse Yarns & Teas on Bainbridge Island. Being so proud of myself with the progress I am making on the shawl, I fell in love with this pattern to make a bowl - look carefully in the bottom of pattern photo. I bought one skein which should be enough to make a middle size bowl. It was only once I was paying and then really reading the pattern, I realized this was Crochet!!, not knitting. It is a very simple stitch so I know I am capable but I like knitting so much better. I decided to buy it anyway. We'll see how it goes!

I had fun last night working on my stars for my new quilt for my bed.
The fabric is Sweetwater Pure from the stash I've been hoarding. The pattern is a Scnibbles Lincoln modified. I wanted to use my wing clipper ruler for the geese which meant I am making the stars slightly different size that Carrie's pattern suggests. There are roughly 40 of these required for the quilt. The other blocks are strip blocks so will hopefully go quickly.

Last week, the family and I were able to escape the heat that settled over NC and went to visit Seattle!
We saw beautiful mountains - these are the Olympic Mtns taken from Hurricane Ridge.
Visited Pike Place Market where we found wonderful fruit and the very first Starbuck's store! (The lines were much too long to get a beverage.)
Inside the market was a small quilt store. This store had more quilt patterns then I've ever seen in one place along with kits. I didn't purchase anything - just enjoyed looking.
We rode the ferry to Bainbridge Island where I found a small fabric / quilt store called Esther's Fabrics. (This store was convienantly located across the street from a wonderful bakery. I left my family in good hands while I shopped!)
I picked up a Seattle themed fat quarter (Timeless Treasures) plus a pin case.
In the town of Port Angeles, I found the sweetest quilt shop - my favorite of the three. This store carried lines from many of my favorite designers and then some new ones. It is probably a good idea that I was just visiting - otherwise I'd spend far too much money there. The inside was even nicer than the outside.
I picked up about 6 fat quarters, just because!
After a week touring the area, it was time to go home. Right before entering security at the airport, I stumbled into a beautiful quilt exhibit. Captured two of my favorites - the quilts were in a glass display so excuse the photo quality.
This one was amazing - by Jennifer Livingston and called Denali Alaska.
This one by Bonnie Buckman was called Geology 4.
Has anyone else been lucky enough to see these quilts in the airport?
The weather in Seattle was chilly with some rain until the very last day we were there. Then, it became all about seeing the 'mountain'. We were treated to amazing views including this one shot of Mt Rainier from the airplane as we headed for home.

I am continuing to enjoy In Color Order HST BOM. The July block is the one at the bottom. I will be calling this quilt Sea Glass.
Working with solids is a lot of fun. I do think I will assemble this without sashing - I just enjoy how all the blocks blend together.
I was happy to receive my layer cake of Mama Said SEW which I had pre-ordered months ago! Sweetwater has does it again with their words on fabric, this time the words are all about sewing! Now, what to do with it? I'm sure I'll think of something!

I'm excited to share my two red, white and blue blocks as part of the Blog Hop. Thanks to Jane and Madame Samm for getting us organized.
For me, a blog hop is an excuse to try something new. For this hop, I decided to give paper piecing a try and had a blast. Both of my blocks can be found on Ulas Quiltpage .
This first block is a New York Beauty block.
This second block pattern is called a 16 point. (I had a bit of trouble with the center where everything came together as there was a bit of bulk to deal with.)

I've been doing some of the cutting and prepping for my queen size quilt. I am going to be using Sweetwater's Pure. The quilt will have over 40 star blocks which mean over 160 flying geese.
I was able to sit on my back porch on a pleasant evening and do the prep work.
I wonder if I could drag my sewing machine outside?

We've a fox living somewhere nearby. He (or she?) has been spotted a few times. Last week, my DH managed to capture some pictures.
The fox is climbing to the top of wood chips piled in our back yard from a tree we had taken down a few weeks ago. Eyes glowing in the photo below because the flash went off. The fox just stared at my DH as he took the photo.
