Hubble .....

opps, not the telescope - the quilt pattern.from Miss Rosie  (Photo from her site) is the AYOS project for October.

When I saw this beautiful pattern, I knew right away that I wanted to make it with either  Moda Tapestry or Marmelade.   These are two new lines (from Fig Tree and Bonnie & Cammile respectively) that I've been looking forward to.  The only problem - they don't come out until October.  

I ordered the pattern and read through it.  It contains an option that didn't involve a billion HST.  Eureka!  I decided to make this one for the parade and then the HST version once I get my hands on a couple of charm packs of either of these new lines.

Wishes

Wishes - my mini-Schnibble based on Speck.

It was quite a lot of fun working on this month's entry of AYOS and it came together rather quickly.  I used 2 mini-charms of Buttercup from my stash.  The quilting was a stipple and it is bound with a solid blue.

Looking forward to the Schnibble parade on Sinta's and Sherri at A Quilting Life on the first.  First of the month is always exciting - you get to see what everyone else has done.  We've already gotten our challenge for October so I've gotten started on that one early.

V4W - Kansas Sunflower

Block four from Barbara Brackman's Grandmother's Choice - Votes for Women Block of the Week is Kansas Sunflower.

Overall, we'll have 49 blocks when we are done.  When I saw this one, I thought - well maybe 48 blocks for me!

I saw a tip which said you could make the sunflower and then applique it on.  I went this way with the block.  I could not get that outer B part connected - it was a major mess.  I also appliqued on the center circle .. well we can pretend it is a circle.  At least it is round-ish.  This was the very first time I did applique where I had to turn under the edge - usually do raw edge.

I did redo my wonky block 2 with those horrible y seams and it went together quite easy this time.  Block is square and flat.  Unclear why that came together so easily the second time.

I do hope we get back to easier blocks like week 1 and 3.

FNSI results

Enjoyed another fun FNSI.   Much of the time was spent attaching the binding to my queen size quilt made from Sweetwater Pure.  My LAQ lady (Cathy Kirk) serges the edges for me and I find that this makes attaching the binding so much easier.  Everything is neatly held together.   Glass of wine at my side, I got about 1/2 done.

I also did some FMQ including this month's Free Motion Quilting Challenge from SewCalGal. Paula Reid was the guest teacher for September.  

This is roughly 8" square and I am going to trim and bind and use it as a small mug rug.  I was pleased with how I did even tracing back over the design in order to get to the next place.  The center looks a little wonky - perhaps an optical illusion from my photo??  

I have really been enjoying this year long FMQ challenge and thank Darleene for bringing to us such wonderful guests!

Mini Schnibble called Speck

Have you seen Moda's latest entry into the pre-cut offerings - these little 2 1/2 inch packs called candy?  I had actually purchased some over a year ago - saw them on one of the online fabric shops - so had these beauties in my stash.

I am making very nice progress on Speck, this month's AYOS.  I'll be adding a border - I've actually some Buttercup yardage in my stash and doing my FMQ during FNSI so I'll be ready for the parade.

A thank you shout out to Sinta - I was a lucky winner from the August AYOS parade and won two Harvest Moon candy packs!  I can make another mini!

Happy Birthday to my DH!

My DH treated himself recently to a Nexus 7 tablet that needed a new home.

I whipped this up to keep it nice and safe.

It looks nice and happy!

I used 2 layers of iron-on batting to give it some extra cushion.  Simple line quilting.

The fabric is a print I ordered from Spoonflower - Dr Who fans will recognize the TARDIS! His favorite color is orange so the inside was an easy fabric choice.

Dots on Dots Blog Hop - My Turn

Doing the happy dance!!  Today is my day on the Dots on Dots blog tour.  I am excited to share my dots on dots block!

First up - a block of 4 pinwheel blocks...

Well, actually, this block is no where near the 101/2 inch size requested for the hop.....

It is actually a mini-quilt that I added to my actual block which I then turned into a mini-quilt - follow all of that?

Here is my actual entry for the blog hop:

I call this mini - Quilt on Quilt, Dots on Dots.   All the fabric is from my stash - I just love the red fabric with the dots.  Wonder if you can get a real sewing machine this color??????

My favorite part about quilting is the creative process.  I started off with the idea of making a paper pieced sewing machine block (googled to find one) but I didn't like the way the dot fabric was looking - cut the dots apart in odd places.  So I decided to flip the pattern over, trace it and turned it into a simple applique!

Instead of a mini-quilt, you could surround the block with spool blocks - all the rage at the moment!

This was so much fun to create and will proudly hang in my sewing room.

V4W Block 3 - Union Square

Block three from Barbara Brackman's Grandmother's Choice - Votes for Women Block of the Week is Union Square.   

I love this one - the red really jumps out at you.  

These fabrics are from Vintage Modern.  Here is the plateau of fabrics I will be using

When I made blocks one and two, I actually upsized them to be 10" blocks and converted from the posted directions for 8' blocks.  Spending time converting Union Square tipped me over the edge so I decided to make 8" after all which meant I have to remake the first two blocks.  I did block 1 in the exact same color combo.  I will tackle block 2 and the y seams in the future.   Since this block didn't turn out square, I am ok trying to make it again.

Pure back from LAQ!

She's home!

Photo shoot coming once the binding is on.  My LAQ (Cathy Kirk) did her usual outstanding job.  She said the quilt got lots of compliments from her other clients while it was on the frame. That made me happy.

I still need a name for this quilt.  I am thinking about Pure & Simple which is one of the phrases that is on that text fabric in the star in the photo.

The September block from the HST BOM from In Color Order.  Could be my favorite block to date!

I am going to need to study the color distribution before making the last 3 blocks to make sure there is a balance of color.

Amethyst : V4W Block 2

Block two from Barbara Brackman's Grandmother's Choice - Votes for Women Block of the Week was a tad frustrating and the seam ripper was my friend.

First up I had to print the template about 15 times to get the % I needed to get the block the dimension I wanted.  (For my printer, this was 125%.)   Fabric choice (Moda Vintage Modern) was easy - I thought the center fabric would resemble what you would see looking through a kaleidoscope.

Y seams and the template almost did me in.  Things were looking good at this point....

But my first attempt ended up with a block that did not lie flat.  I carefully removed most of the seams, googgled instructions on Y seams and took a second try.  This second attempt is much better.  The block essentially lies flat - however is it not square.  I will square it and then put sashing of some sort around it to get it to the right size.

I also got some blocks done for my AYOS Speck project.

Tetris All Assembled

The final task from the Tetris Quilt-a-long from Happy Quilting is to assemble the blocks and then quilt. 

Mine is all assembled.  I tried to put it together so the final result would be a legitimate Tetris (i.e. no blanks where the block above could have fallen into) but it was hard to do. There is at least on spot where I messed up.

I am going borderless and will likely use a black binding.

Now, to quilt this.  It measures 24 by 36" since I used 2 1/2" squares.   Should I outline each block - perhaps in a black or perhaps in a color to match the block.  Not sure I have orange or purple thread but likely have blue, green and yellow.  I think outlining the blocks would be fine and then maybe something in the 4 block squares?  I open to any ideas here!

Lucy

Remember this episode?

My sister is a very big Lucy fan so for her upcoming significant birthday, I am making her a quilt.  Quilting Treasures has Lucy's Chocolate Factory fabric so it seemed perfect.   Given the colors are a bit 'loud', I went for bigger blocks - 16 inch stars using this fabric.  This photo is reasonably true to color.

Five large starts, eight smaller stars surrounded by candy geese.  The quilt is roughly 64 inches square.

Lucy is at the LAQ this month (aka the quilt spa.)  My sister's birthday is in December so I'm feeling right on schedule.

Votes for Women - Block One

I took the plunge - with a little bit of help from a blogland friend - and made my first block for Barbara Brackman's Grandmother's Choice - Votes for Women Block of the Week.

Surprise, surprise, block one is Grandmother's Choice!

I am going to be using selected prints from Moda Vintage Modern.  Perhaps not appropriate for the time period but the fabric is gorgeous!  I choose to make this first block from the aqua solid and prints.
