Coloring outside the lines

I used a single charm pack of La Petite Ecole and a large scrap of Luna Notte to make my smaller version of this month's Schnibble.

I spent far too much time with my seam ripper during the assembly process.  As a result, some of the blocks were not quite as neat and tidy as I would have liked.

I decided to take a risk on the quilting - hence the coloring outside the lines blog post title.  Instead of just doing an overall meander, I decided to go with the feather theme.  I love how my four feathers turned out on the inner sashings and the border feathers are ok.  However, not overly fond of what I did in the blocks themselves.

That said, I did have a blast doing the FMQ.  Feathers really are fun.  Next time, I need to try for something which does feathers over the whole quilt - ignoring the blocks themselves.

Looking forward to seeing what others have done with their fabric choices with parade time at Sinta's and Sherri's blogs

Snow quilting style

I love Snowmen so Quilt Doodle Doodle's quilt along is on my list this year.  It is a mystery BOM.   Her directions called for 7 snowman but I wanted to make a smaller quilt - more wall hanging size - so I made 5 snowman which put the width of row one to be about 42 inches

The buttons are just placed on top for the photo - I need to find some black ones.

Great fun to assemble!

I posted the list of 2014 quilt alongs I found in case you missed it.

I see circles!!

My January goal for Another Lovely Year of Finishes was to complete all the blocks and assemble the center quilt top from Bonnie Hunter's Celtic Solstice mystery.

It was pedal to the metal time to get this all assembled.  I decided on a 6x6 block layout and needed to make many, many chevrons to get the extra blocks done.  I don't really like those chevrons.

(The photos clearly show that I did NOT press after the final assembly! )
I'm glad to see the circle shows up even though the contrast on the my "blue" fabric isn't the strongest.  This currently measures 54 1/2 inches square.  There are 3 outer borders, one of them pieced.

Linking up to the finishes party here.

Hello Moon Blocks are complete

November and December blocks from April Mae Design's Hello Moon quilt along.

Here are all 12 blocks.  I am looking forward to assembling this and quilting it.  I am thinking this will be a wall hanging.

My favorite block of the dozen is the one with the cute alien.

Gotta love these blocks.

2014 Quilt-A-Longs

This time of year, I am always tempted by multiple quilt-a-longs that pop up all over blog land.

Melissa is doing a Star Light Star Bright quilt-a-long.  You can make one block or many blocks.  I am going to join this one.  The information on her blog is here.   This starts on Jan 15th and runs through end of March.  The cool part for this one is Melissa clearly provides instructions for multiple size options - even a one block version.

Love Snowmen so Quilt Doodle Doodle's quilt along is one I am going to do.  This is a mystery BOM.  I intend to make this from my stash but did have to order a good background fabric.

Fat Quarter Shop has started a Wishes Quilt Along, a 12 month block program.  I like the basic concept here - you are encouraged to donate to the Make a Wish foundation as you build out the quilt.  I've going to do this in red and aqua.  These are 14" blocks which I am not so fond of so perhaps I will scale things down.

Classic Meets Modern looks interesting - this is a 12" block every month.

Monique is at it again with another Blogger Girls BOM II.  I enjoyed making the blocks last year - although I never did assemble that quilt top.  Perhaps I should 'combine' the efforts?  The intriguing part of this one is you make 2 blocks each month - a variation caused by different fabric placements.

SewCalGal has declared this to be the year of Red and White challenges.  Details aren't available until later in the month but I am intrigued.  I've done her FMQ challenges the last two years.

Pat Sloan has a mystery BOM called Globetrotting.

I found this really cute penguin one from Fat Cat Patterns.  I think I will make a mini version of this one!

Finally, SewCalCal is encouraging working on Christmas throughout the year.  I made the pledge and now need a plan.  However, I did whip up a small jewelry holder and will put it aside until December.  I had all intentions of making this last Christmas and it was sitting all kitted out on my table so I put it together.  There is a linkup party each month so I am hoping I will get some ideas!

Celtic Solstice progress

After Bonnie's big reveal on New Year's Day for the Celtic Solstice mystery, I've been busy assembling blocks and making some more!    I had enough pieces to make 17 blocks initially and have decided on a 6 by 6 layout so I needed an additional 19 blocks.

Last weekend I worked on the construction and assembly of 11 more blocks and now have 8 left to go.  These 8 blocks contain the dreaded chevron - I have trouble keeping that block square.

Slightly blurry picture below but you'll see in my not very scrappy interpretation, I used two different aqua fabrics to make both the HST and the Tri Recs.   For my layout above, I wanted to put the solid aqua in the center to really make the circles pop and then fade off on the edges to the flower aqua fabric.  Unfortunately, I've nothing left of the solid aqua so i'll play around a bit more with the layout once the other blocks are completed.

The blocks will finish at 9 inches so a 6 by 6 block layout will be 54 inches before the borders are added.  If I remember her pattern correctly, the borders add 6 inches all around so I'll be at a 66 by 66 layout.

For next years mystery, I need to remember to just be consistent - a half scrappy mystery quilt is hard to pull off!   I hope to get the remainder of the blocks assembled this weekend.

Stitch by stitch

I started this shawl in early July and blogged about it here and again in September.   Right now, it is roughly 26 inches long.   This will be a definite wrap yourself in it shawl.

I am in love with this yarn - Sirdary Snuggly baby bamboo and the lovely silver gray color.

The pattern is from the Purl Bee  There are 12 rows in each pattern repeat - half of those are lace rows, half are purl rows.  I've just finished my millionth of a gazillion repeats of the pattern and - maybe - now have the hang of it.

Based on the volume of yarn consumed and left to go, I am slightly - just slightly - less than half way.  I tend to knit sitting in front of the tv which isn't something I do very often so the going has been slow.    It is enjoyable.

My goal remains to finish it by - or at least in - the spring!

Hello Sweetie!

Another block done for the Dr Who quilt a long.  I tackled this block over many, many days and don't really want to know how many hours I spent given the large volumes of little, itty bitty pieces.  I love the River Song character in the show - here is a link to a youtube video of all the times she says Hello Sweetie.

Here are all my blocks.

These blocks are all from the Dr Who paper piecing quilt along.  There are 20 blocks in all and I've skipped a few.  This will be a wall hanging and I'm going after a 3 by 4 block setting.

Sunburst

Introducing Sunburst - my entry into the Sunrise Sunset Kona blog hop.

Isn't this a fantastic explosion of color?  What fun it was to play with all the bright squares of sunlight.   I took these pictures in the early morning light on the last day of 2013.

This is an original design.  I did a spiral using my walking foot to quilt it.

The back of the quilt gives away how I captured these photos.  You'll see I put hanging triangles in each of the 4 corners so I've options how to hang it.

Gotta love the spiral - takes a lot of time but so worth it in the end.

To make my Sunburst quilt, I used a single charm pack of Kona and a half yard of gray.   The charms were cut into 2 inch pieces for the squares and 2 1/2 inch pieces to make the HST along the edge of the star.

Now grab your tea and join me in visiting the other talented ladies I have the privilege of sharing today with!

The Big Reveal!

Bonnie did the big reveal New Year's Day for the Celtic Solstice mystery.
All those little pieces  get put together into two very fun blocks.  This one ....

and this one...

All put together form this wonderful quilt with movement and color.

My indoor picture doesn't really show up the circles that these blocks seem to form out of my aqua color.
(It was too cold and too windy to do an outside shot.)

I intend to make more blocks.  These are 9 inch block and there is a 3 piece border that would add 6 inches to each side.  I am undecided on the final size -  a 5 x 5 layout would yield a quilt 57 x 57 or a 6x6 layout would yield a quilt 63 by 63.

Figuring this out and assembling the remainder of my blocks is my January goal for Another Lovely Year of Finishes.  I will be linking this post up here and to Bonnie's blog.
