Tapestry

This ALYOS month's challenge is this mini quilt pattern is Round and Round.

A very enjoyable quick pattern!   I actually made it a bit bigger but still plan to go back and make it the smaller size.  I used a mini charm pack of Moda Tapestry.  Love, love this fabric line.

Did some straight line quilting.   Looking forward to the parade tomorrow at Sinta's and Sherri's blogs.

Dream

I made this quilt June 2013 as part of SewCalGal's FMQ challenge.  It was a donation mni in support of the Alzheimer's Art Quilt initiative.  (my initial blog post)

I just noticed that it sold as part of their 'clearance sale'.  At least it made some money for the cause.  See it here!  I did get a small thrill to have 'sold' something.  Won't give up my day job just yet though.  (grin)

Hello Sweetie!

Hello Sweetie!

My Dr Who quilt is all done!  I had a blast quilting and thread painting all of the blocks and then went with a basic straight line quilting for the background.  I like how some of the items like the book and the scarf seem to just be floating since there is no defined background.

The blocks were all paper pieced and came from the Dr Who paper piecing quilt along.

I have this hanging in our bonus room where I can see it from my sewing corner.  I put the Weeping Angel on the edge so she is looking towards the corner of the room where the dust bunnies live.  The fish tank right below her should be safe - fish don't have eye lids and therefore can't blink!

My previous blog posts (here, here & here) have close up photos of the individual blocks.

Quilting this quilt top was my ALYOF goal for April - I'll be linking up here!   (Here is the link to my goal post.)

The last of the thread painting

It is just so much fun to come home from work and sit down and loose myself in the FMQ / thread painting of my Dr Who Quilt.

I wasn't the biggest fan of the scarf block until I gave it some character with thread.

For the Hello Sweetie block, I outlined the 'letters' and then stippled around them.  (Excuse the threads that need trimming....)

Last by not least is the TARDIS.  I may go back and FMQ in the windows - not sure I like how they are popping up.

Here is the overall quilt before the FMQ journey started -

A new mini

Used a mini charm pack of Moda Tapestry to make this mini.

The pattern is Round and Round.  I'm thinking about straight line quilting for this one.  It was quite fun so perhaps I'll make another!

Progress on my April row for Quilt Doodle's quilt along.  This is a mystery BOM.  I am making this wall hanging size which means it will be smaller in both height and width.  I expect I will skip a row and skip one the the blocks.

In addition to the stars, I've got my snowmen and the house block done.  Will likely do the tree but I am waiting to see what May and September blocks bring.

(Note, I did not use my treadle to assemble these blocks - does make for a great photo op!)

Craving for geese

Geese, geese and more geese.

Had a craving for geese so I took a couple of pretty squares from my Road 15 layer cake and started a new project.  Just love these blues and greens.

I am going to make a small quilt for my daughter to give to her host family.  I like this Road 15 fabric for the colors as well as the cities and towns text fabric.  Most of these are from the US, but there are cities throughout the globe there as well.

And my street address is on this fabric as well.  I managed to use the street text in this mini I had made - the bottom left black fabric has the address.

This is my favorite kind of quilt- great fabric and design as I go.  I've a basic idea of where I'm headed but the creativity is in the discovery.

More thread painting

My journey in FMQ / thread painting my Dr Who quilt continues.  This will be a wall hanging so it doesn't need to be soft or cuddly!

The weeping angel - don't blink!

Gallifrey falls no more - I had a perfect color orange thread that I had gotten as a gift.

Cyberman looking intimidating....

Middle Sister

In celebration of each of my sister's hitting the big 50, I make them a quilt.   I'm the oldest of 7 girls and this is girl number 4 - the middle one!

I call this quilt Middle Sister and used the beautiful Moda Tapestry line.  These colors and this pattern are just perfect for my sister Caroline.

I actually pieced this jewel box pattern in August during our week at the beach.  (Should have taken a road trip back for the finish photo!)

Finally got the binding on in February and mailed it to my sister.  Her birthday is April 25 so it was gifted in plenty of time to help ease her way into the next decade.

The quilting pattern is an all over design done by Cathy Kirk.  I can not remember the name of the pattern - fit nicely though with the shapes in the fabric.

Happy Birthday Caroline!  Love you sis!

Thread painting

Going to town on my Dr Who FMQ.  I am starting with each of the blocks - doing some FMQ and essentially thread painting.

Here is my Dalek with my attempt at a 3D effect by not quilting that telescope like thing.

K9 was just a bunch of straight lines.  He is so cute.

River Song's book was fun.  I like the way the pages look.

Blue Boxy Bags

These boxy bags are very addicting!   I had so much fun making my first that I made two more!

First, from a fat quarter in my stash is this pretty blue dot with a bright orange zipper.

Inside I used some French text fabric.  We've a French exchange student staying with in a few weeks and I wanted her to feel at home.  (Her favorite colors are blue and orange.)

I also made one for my daughter.  Same blue color scheme and she got the Eifel Tower fabric.  My daughter will go on her own exchange trip to France in May.

There are more of these in my future!  The tutorial was here on Pinkxstitches blog.

Basting away

Tried a new method for basting that I saw on my friend Frieda's blog.   I secure down the 3 layers on a large piece of sewing cardboard using binder clips.  This worked really well!!!  (Watching Frozen on my iPad while I worked was an added bonus!)

I was able to put it up on my kitchen island.  Nothing slipped around.  No tape to mess with.  And I didn't have to crawl all over the floor!

I used a mix of bent safety pins and straight pins with my pinmors.   Didn't quite have enough but I think it will work.

This is my Dr Who quilt.  Had a little fun with this Cyberman - he doesn't look too scary in this photo, does he?

Rest assured, he is as menacing as ever!

Quilting this quilt top is my ALYOF goal for April - I'll be linking up here!   The blocks were all paper pieced and came from the Dr Who paper piecing quilt along.

vert et rouge

I love blog inspired quilt a longs so I had a fun time with  Melissa's Start Bright quilt-a-long  I used  Moda Scrumptious fabric and turned a single block into a mini quilt.

When faced with a blank canvas, I have two go to FMQ stitches - either the basic meander / stipple or feathers.  Feathers are probably the most fun so I used a pretty green thread and put feathers in all the green areas.

I tried my hand at pebbling in the red areas - I was really not sure how to get the effect I wanted but gave it my best.

I left the white area open.   Used a red binding to try and tone down the green just a bit!

I was really stumped to come up with a name for this mini quilt so I went with green and red but added a bit of French flair ....  vert et rouge.   We've a exchange student from France coming to live with us in a few weeks so getting in the mood!

Melissa will have a finish parade on her blog toay.
