Off to the SPA - ALYOF

My ALYOF goal for July (goal post) was to get the border on my Celtic Solstice quilt and prepare the backing fabric.

I really appreciate all the suggestions on border.  I decided to go with a narrow white border and will either go with the green as binding or an aqua.

The final decision maker was the amount of fabric I had on hand.  This quilt ended up bigger than I original intended when I ordered the backing fabric.  Wasn't room for another border.

Backing fabric all prepared and the quilt goes off to the spa (aka my long arm quilter)!

I'll be linking up here for the finishes party.

I'm in love!

I made my first 2 blocks from my Farmer's Wife book.   I just love these cute little blocks!

#1: Attic windows

#2: Autumn Tints

When I made my New Jersey quilt, I had purchased this yummy stack of Vintage Modern fabrics.  I just loved my finish quilt and gave it away to my mom for Christmas.  I have lots of the fabric left so decided to make my FW quilt in the same fabric line.

I found the paper piecing patterns by joining a Farmer's Wife group on Yahoo.

Anyone out there starting their FW journey?  I am thinking about doing 2-3 blocks per week.

Border progress

I set a goal to add borders to my Celtic Solstice quilt.

I added an inner border of white and then the next border of these tri-recs.

This work was done over a week ago.  What this photo doesn't show, however, was the wavy-ness of the border.  I was too lazy to do math (ugh!) so ended up with a border that was slightly too long.  While it all sewed together just fine, when I spread the quilt out on the floor it wouldn't lie flat.

Of course I figured this out when all four sides were sewn on!   Out game the seam ripper and I reapplied the borders with much better focus on measuring, math and lining things up properly!

Now, I want to go with a final outer border.   Can I get your opinion?

Should I go with a narrow white border?

Or should I go with a wider aqua print border?

It sure is hard to get a good indoor photo and boy does this quilt need pressing!

Another alternative is to just call it done.

Farmers Wife

Last year, I had such fun with the Votes for Women block of the month (my final blog post) and I've been searching for a similar kind of project.

Since I've been continuously tempted by the Farmer's Wife blocks that have popped up for the last year (here is a pintrest board on the topic), I decided to make my own version - using modern fabrics and brighter colors.  I've got enough stash to get started.

I ordered my book from Amazon and anxiously await its arrival.    I also found and joined a Yahoo group and have access to paper pieced versions of the blocks.  That is the way I intend to go.  Templates are just not my thing but paper piecing can be fun.

Anyone else about to get started?

Celtic Solstice borders

I made some progress on my borders for my Celtic Solstice quilt.

I started first with the idea of making the pieced border the third and outer border.  I went with a border of white and then with green.

Had to see in that photo - here is another angle

The quilt was reading as too green.

Next step was to take the tri-rec blocks I made - like the ones on the right, and sew that against the green.    Nope - wasn't happening for me.  They just didn't look right against the green.

So I removed the green border and went with the 2nd border as the tri-recs.   Quilt doesn't read so green any more - which is good.   However, that red really catches the eye.    I'd prefer to see the aqua catch the eye.  I want to help one see the 'circles' that the blocks form.

After I get the top and bottom tri-rec border on, I will audition different out borders - I'm thinking about aqua or white.    (None of these photos are truly capturing my colors here.)

Any thoughts here for me?

AMB Farm to Fabric Challenge - Giveaway

A month or so ago, I was fortunate enough to participate in a blog hop across America sponsored by American Made Brand to promote their new line of solids.

Here is a link to my blog post about my North Carolina block - pattern is available.

I wanted to make sure everyone was aware of their Farm to Fabric Challenge -  you can find more about the challenge on this web site.  It is an opportunity to submit an original quilt made with AMB solids.

Registration is open until August 15th.

To celebrate the latest challenge, AMB is giving me a tote bag to give away to one of my readers.

This bag is 13" by 15" and would be a great market bag or a fabric bag.

Want to win the bag?  Just leave me a comment on this blog post.

Tell me whether or not you have tried AMB solids.

Giveaway is open to US residents.   I'll select a winner Sunday evening, July 13th.

Time to get back to Celtic Soltice

The quilt is calling to me.  Calling to me to finish it!

So close to being a finished quilt top.  It just needs borders!  This is from Bonnie Hunter's Celtic Solstice mystery.  I used Moda Scrumptious fabric.

The pattern calls for 3 outer border where one is this tri-rec block shown on the right above.  I will need about 80 of them.  I only have 46 so I have to either make more or change up the border.

My July goal is to finish this quilt top and prepare the backing fabric.  I'll be linking up here!

American Stars

Several years ago, there was a lovely quilt shop near my home that carried a wide variety of fabrics and always had an abundance of fat quarters placed invitingly around the store.  So easy to just grab a few and build up a stash.   (The day this store closed was a sad one.)

I assembled a variety of star fabrics with a plan of making a star quilt.   I kept all the fabrics sorted together and recently 'rediscovered' them.   There was a bunch of geese made in support of star blocks so I assembled them this weekend.  Here are 5 of them - I've another 4 almost completed.

This is my favorite one.  I love the star fabric and the stripped fabric.  Sadly, I've no idea what fabric line that is nor do I have any more.

I've a fat quarter of this background fabric so it might get me a few more stars.

Aren't they fun?

I am thinking of kitting up some stars as my own leader and ender project with a goal of assembling of full quilt.

What do you think?
