Farmer's Wife Puzzle

Best puzzle ever - assembling quilt blocks!

Starting to assemble my Farmer's Wife quilt as I finish up the blocks was my ALYOF goal for February.  (My goal setting post was here.)

My blocks are red, aqua or gray so I decided on a layout with roughly 80 blocks completed and am now planning carefully to fill in the color I need.  I've already printed out the paper piece patterns for the remainder of the blocks so I was able to put them in place and record what color they need to be.

I've made good use of graph paper to keep track as well as to record what specific block is where!

I've assembled things in sections - just seaming together a couple of blocks in each row and using webbing to keep the section together.  This will make it easier to hit the 'undo' button if I find a combination I don't like in the final layout.

About half of the blocks are all assembled in these rows.

I also have each section marked with a scrap piece of fabric and the position in the grid where it will fit.   The rows are numbered, the columns are labeled.

I am so excited in how this is all coming together.  Can't believe I've about 20 blocks to go!

Snapshots Quilt A Long - Sew On & Sew On

Block 2 in Fat Quarter Shops's BOM is called Sew On & Sew On

I'd really love to have an aqua sewing machine!

I had a little bit of trouble with this one because I was trying to keep the pattern in the fabric all going the same way.  I cut incorrectly several times but saved all the scrap pieces - they'll likely come in handy later.

I'm using a fat 8th bundle of Miss Kate to make this quilt.

Here was my first block - Let them eat cake block!

You can find the pattern for this month's block here and more information on the Fat Quarter Shop page.  Besides the fun of building the quilt, this is all about donating to St Jude.

Farmer's Wife Blocks 88 - 90

Early last week, we got about an inch (or less) of snow, sleet, freezing rain that closed schools for 4 days.  Yes, 4 days.  Somewhat embarressing but with very cold temperatures, North Carolina just can't deal with it.

Temps climbed into the 50's on Sunday so icy roads are behind us.

Had fun with this week's FW blocks.#88 -  Star of Hope  - using a piece of my favorite fabric in this one.

#89 - Steps to the Altar  - this one didn't look at crooked in person.  May need to fix it a bit.

#90 -  Storm Signal  - Wanted to make this an all gray block but it looked ... you guessed it .. too gray!

Have a great week!

Farmer's Wife 85 - 87

When I did my block inventory, I am definitely low on gray blocks so made two of them this week.

#85 - Square Dance

#86 -  Squash Blossom

#87 - Star Gardener

Now that I am really working on sewing things together, it is getting very exciting!

Here a bag

Here's a bag...

there's a bag...

Couldn't resist making two more in slightly different dimensions.

Don't you love it when the kids ask for you to make them something?  (At least when it is small and you've time and interest to make a small project?)  My daughter wanted a little bag to put her rings in during dance class at school.   I made her the red bag and it hooks to her backpack.   The other bag is for me (about 5" long) and is from a mini charm of Horizons.

See how they compare to the typical sized boxy bag I've made?

Such fun!

Fabric needed - Moda Vintage Modern

I've been doing some close examination of my remaining fabric for my Farmer's Wife quilt and find myself almost out of two of the blue fabrics.

These were from Moda Vintage Modern line - both of these blue prints in this block below.

Anyone have a FQ or even scraps for purchase or trade?  I don't need much but I do need some!

Thanks in advance!

Because I could

What is one more project?

I love Peanuts and could resist joining this one - here she is  ...  Peppermint Patty.

Join the fun on this one here. and the pattern is from Tweety Loves Quilting..

There is a strip of blue at top and bottom of the block that I haven't attached yet.

I am going to wait before I add all the details and likely do it once it is a quilt sandwich.

Farmer's Wife 82 - 84

27 more blocks to go!!!  Clearly the home stretch!

82 - Spider Legs (icky block name but fun block!)

83 - Spider Web (enough of this spider theme)

84 - Spool  (GREAT block!)

I am setting half of these blocks on point.  I played with the first 80 and made some decisions on the layout so I can better plan the color choices for the remaining blocks.

Too bad i don't have a design wall.   This will be a big quilt and I had to clean it up right away.    The blue postit notes represent the blocks I need to make.  I am going to concentrate the next few blocks as grey so I can fill in the top and actually assemble the first 5 rows.

The quilt will be 10 blocks by 11 blocks with 1 left over for the quilt label!

Hope you are having a great week.

Happy Birthday my sweet daughter

My daughter turned 19 this past weekend.

Wow.

The weather here in NC was warm enough to go on a picnic together and a walk in a local park.

We had dinner in her favorite restaurant.

And my youngest made her sister a chocolate cake.

I made her a mini quilt using my Everyday Love pattern.  It will hang in her room.

My lovely daughter has Down syndrome.  Her excitement about her birthday and, really, about lots of things in life makes me happy.  I blogged some more about her 2 years ago in this post.

Farmer's Wife 79 - 81

More Farmer's Wife blocks -

#79 - Silver Lane

#80 -  Single Wedding Star / Broken Wheel

#81 - Snowball

These blocks are 6" unfinished.  For my actual quilt, I am going with a setting where every other block is on point.  For those blocks that don't finish at a square 6", I am putting some sashing and trimming them to the right size.

My February project for Another Lovely Year of Finishes is to get these first 80 blocks finished and begin the assembly.  I want to plan the color choices carefully for my last 30 blocks.

Here is my mosaic for blocks 51 through 75 -

blocks 26 through 50 -

and blocks 1 through 25

Let them eat cake!!

I have been looking forward to the FatQuarterShop Snapshots quilt from the very first time I saw a photo.   Block one was released Jan 15 and I hade so much fun putting this one together!

It clearly could be a mini quilt all by itself as could every single one of the blocks.  The pattern calls for 21 fat quarters.  I was fortunate enough to win a fat 8th bundle of Miss Kate from Another Lovely Year of Schnibbles and plan to use that, supplementing as needed with a little bit more fabric.

You can find the pattern here and more information on the Fat Quarter Shop page.  Besides the fun of building the quilt, this is all about donating to St Jude.

Everyday Love

Hearts are not just for Valentine's Day.

Hearts do not have to be red either!   Grab your favorite mini charm pack and my new pattern and create a Everyday Love mini for all of your favorite people!

I used a mini charm pack of Feed Company by Moda (gifted to me by my blog buddy Kris).

I did straight line quilting - denser inside the hear than the background fabric.

Please see my other blog Elm Street Quilts for more information on this pattern and my others patterns.
